revs up when passing a car

2000 mustang v6 3.8 it goes through the gears fine but when you go to pass a
car it revs up but does not accel to pass the car can some one help please

I'll bet that tranny's been through some hell after 22 years

Yup, probably time for a transmission rebuild. But I would check the fluid level first, ti might just be low.
