Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Blew a timing belt on my 2004 2.7 v6 Hyundai
Tiburon GT. Car coasted about 40ft after engine
died. Will I need a new engine or just need to
replace my timing belt??

Its my understanding Simi interference which means yes if the timing belt breaks the valves in the heads will bend and motor is pretty much toast. At least for the top end, the bottom end may have survived.

The top end has to come off and inspected/repaired/replaced as needed and pistons need to be inspected for damage, if they are fine top end reinstalled after its had its repairs with the new timing belt and tensioners if needed.

I blew my timing belt (06 Tibby GT 2.7), and I ended up replacing all 24 valves bc the exhaust valves in cylinders 1 & 5 were bent. If you rebuild, pay attention to pistons for holes or cracking. Mine is back on the road. After timing belt/water pump kit, new intake and exhaust valves, and a $150 bill from the local machine shop, it only cost me about $350 total. But, I'm a mechanic, so I didn't have to pay someone to do it... Saves a lot of money on labor!

A 2.7 engine usually bends two valves when the timing belt goes. The exhaust valves are interfering with the pistons when the camshafts stop turning. One or usually both cylinder heads must be removed, repaired, and reinstalled.

Please help. I had my car taken to a mechanic and after discovering the timing belt broke, the mechanic called me and notified me that a rebuild is in order because valves were bent and the cylinders have no compression. He quoted me $4200 to rebuild?? I'm in Madison Wisconsin. If anyones knows someone who can help rebuild the top and possibly replace the bent valves and or all 24 plus timing belt/water pump for cheaper, I'll buy needed parts and pay cash for labor. Obviously a local machine shop and or someone willing to work on 2006 2.7 liter Hyundai Tiburon SE.
