Engine light came on

Asked by E Dec 25, 2020 at 01:37 AM about the 2008 Hyundai Accent L Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a 2008 Hyundai accent sedan four door
with a 123,000 miles on it. Car clean inside and out
runs good then just today the engine light came on.
So worried about it I stopped at my local auto
parts store were they provide the ODBII code
reader. It had read code PO496. What is the issue?
And what do I need to do to fix it?

Sounds like the purge valve for the EVAP system is stuck open. The EVAP system routes gasoline fumes to the engine to be burned up instead of being released into the atmosphere. The purge valve opens and closes to regulate the flow of these fumes going to the engine. The purge valve is controlled by the computer or PCM (Powertrain Control Module). Replacing the purge valve and clearing the PCM should fix the problem. Hope that helps! Jim
