01 Ranger No Crank No Start

Asked by Corbin Oct 19, 2018 at 12:14 PM about the 2001 Ford Ranger XLT 2 Door SuperCab Flareside RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 01 Ford Ranger wouldn’t crank when I
came out the other morning.

I have power; interior and exterior lights
work, radio turns on, etc. but when I turn the
key, there is just a click.

Thought to get a boost, but it didn’t really
respond at all to the jump. So I replaced the
starter. Needless to say, that didn’t work
either. Now I’m at my wit’s end. This is my
work truck!

Any of you Ford guys know what’s going on
or what I need to do to fix my truck?

First thing is to make sure all the battery connections and the connection at the starter are absolutely clean, free of corrosion and tight. Next step is to have the battery charged and tested.

I took the battery to Oreilly and they tested it (good) and they recharged it to like 13.46v. I replaced the terminal connectors, and cleaned everything I could that led to the battery. The negative on the starter was a bit loose so o tightened it down. But it still only clicks.

I had a similar problem. After reading lots of forums I found out that there is a transducer around the keyswitch inside the plastic shroud. Less than 20 bucks at the dealer. Make sure your key hasn't lost the "chip" inside the handle. It is a glass tube 3/4 inch long. I had mine to fall out and lost but found it. They were 2 separate problems.
