CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Ford Ranger

Summary
With 2,132 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,580.00, 32.6% of 2022 Ford Rangers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Ford Ranger 4 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Ranger stands out as a midsize pickup that blends modern capability with a relatively simple formula. It uses a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine making 270 horsepower, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and it offers fuel efficiency of up to 23 mpg combined. Ford also made active-safety features available, including Co-Pilot 360 and adaptive cruise control, though neither was standard. That combination gives the Ranger a more contemporary feel than many older compact and midsize trucks, while still keeping the truck straightforward enough to appeal to buyers who want utility first.
It is also a practical choice because it was offered in two body configurations, a SuperCab with reverse-opening rear access panels and a full four-door SuperCrew. The Ranger’s body structure and frame were reinforced for U.S. regulations, and it delivered the highest payload capacity of any midsize pickup truck at the time, along with a very competitive 7,500-pound maximum towing capacity when properly equipped. It was also described as an adept off-roader, especially after the Tremor package arrived in 2021. At the same time, the cabin and infotainment system were basic by modern standards: the truck used an eight-inch screen with Ford’s older Sync3 system, and even that was optional, while base trucks got a 4.2-inch LCD screen.
For shoppers, the appeal of the 2022 Ford Ranger is that it feels capable and durable without being overly complicated. It was praised as a good work truck, and the base XL trim still came with the full mechanical setup of the other Rangers. The tradeoff is that it looked plain inside and out, and the generation’s used prices remained relatively high. Still, for buyers who want a midsize pickup with strong towing and payload credentials, available safety tech, and a reputation for being adept at work and off-road duty, the 2022 Ranger has a clear identity.

Engine is meh. Has to be driven above 3000 RPM to get any performance out of it. Previous owner had modified the truck and there were things we would have had to remove, over sized tires rubbed the fender wells at full lock, bed rack and such. $40,000 for a 3 year old Ranger...no one is going to think thats a good value. Its a compact truck and it feels like it. Were coming from an F150 and its night and day difference.

Is the 2022 Ford Ranger reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Ranger’s simple formula is part of its strength: it focuses on core truck hardware, practical capability, and a straightforward setup rather than complexity. That can be a plus if you want a used pickup that’s easier to live with and less likely to overwhelm you with features you won’t use.
For a used buyer, the main long-term risk is buying a truck that was worked hard or modified without proper maintenance records.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Ranger?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because even a strong accident-free share doesn’t guarantee the specific truck you’re considering has a clean past. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on signs of hard use, uneven wear, and any evidence of off-road or towing abuse.
Pay close attention to overall condition, since a midsize pickup can hide a lot of wear in the suspension, brakes, and cargo area. If the truck has been used as a work vehicle, make sure the maintenance history matches the mileage and the asking price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Ranger?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,180 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.09% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,569.09, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Ranger's resale value?
The current average of $28,754 sits slightly below last year's $31,285.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, condition and mileage will matter a lot, especially because trucks with visible wear can lose buyer interest quickly.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,632, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,754 average.
- It emphasizes off-road capability with a more terrain-focused identity.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2022 if you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and satisfaction. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2021 is the better value path, especially if you’re comfortable giving up some of the 2022’s market positioning.
