CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Ford Ranger

Summary
With 2,119 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,311, 32.6% of 2022 Ford Rangers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Ford Ranger 4 / 5 stars.
85.9% of 2022 Ranger models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Ranger stands out as a midsize pickup that blends strong capability with a fairly simple, work-focused personality. It uses a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine making 270 horsepower, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and it can be had with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Ford also gave it a reputation for doing real truck work well: this generation offered the highest payload capacity of any midsize pickup truck at the time, along with a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds when properly equipped.
It is also more modern than its plain appearance might suggest. Active-safety features such as Ford Co-Pilot 360 and adaptive cruise control were available, and the cabin included an eight-inch screen running Sync3, with a 4.2-inch LCD screen in base trucks. At the same time, the 2022 Ford Ranger is not the most polished choice in the class; the interior was described as looking like it was designed in the late 2000s, and the generation’s reliability record is mixed, with the 2019 debut singled out for the most complaints. Even so, its combination of toughness, useful capability, and relatively good fuel efficiency makes it appealing to buyers who want a straightforward truck that can handle both daily use and heavier jobs.

Engine is meh. Has to be driven above 3000 RPM to get any performance out of it. Previous owner had modified the truck and there were things we would have had to remove, over sized tires rubbed the fender wells at full lock, bed rack and such. $40,000 for a 3 year old Ranger...no one is going to think thats a good value. Its a compact truck and it feels like it. Were coming from an F150 and its night and day difference.

Is the 2022 Ford Ranger a good car?
Generally — the 4/5 user rating points to a truck that satisfies many used buyers. The 2022 Ford Ranger stands out as a midsize pickup that blends strong capability with a fairly simple, work-focused personality, and it appeals if you want a straightforward truck that can handle both daily use and heavier jobs. It also brings useful capability, including a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds when properly equipped and the highest payload capacity of any midsize pickup truck at the time.
That said, it is not the most polished choice in the class, and its cabin was described as looking like it was designed in the late 2000s. Even so, the combination of toughness, useful capability, and relatively good fuel efficiency makes it a practical fit for buyers who value function over flash. 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Ford Ranger reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 Ford Ranger’s reliability picture is mixed, with the generation’s record described that way and the 2019 debut singled out for the most complaints. Even so, the truck’s straightforward mechanical setup and work-focused design can make it appealing if you want a used pickup that is easy to understand and use.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is getting a truck with a rough early-life history, so condition and documentation matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Ranger?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and confirm there are no hidden accident or title issues. Put inspection priority on the truck’s overall condition, especially signs of hard use, because this model is often bought for real work. Focus on how well the truck has been maintained and whether it shows wear that matches its mileage and intended use.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Ranger?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting deep discounts on every listing.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,120 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.43% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,295, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Ranger's resale value?
The current average of $28,295 sits slightly below last year's $31,242.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more efficiently now but may also mean future resale gains are more limited. For a seller, the current trend points to a truck that still has demand, but not enough scarcity to push prices sharply higher. If you keep the truck in strong condition and avoid accident history, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,346, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,295 average.
- It adds a more serious off-road identity with Tremor-focused capability.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around current-year market position, the 2022 is the better primary target because pricing has eased and inventory is healthy. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2021 is the better secondary path, especially if you want a lower entry price and can live with an older model year.
