The Ford Ranger just returned to the United States market a few years ago, but it has been a global pickup for years. Ford is expected to overhaul the truck after 2023 for the US, but in the meantime, it’s unchanged from the year before for 2022.
Ford sells the 2022 Ranger in several trims, including XL, XLT, and Lariat. Buyers can upgrade each trim with appearance and performance packages, such as the Tremor package for the XLT trim and STX Special Edition Package for the base XL. The truck is also available in two body styles: A SuperCab with a 6-foot box or SuperCrew with a 5-foot box.
All Rangers come with a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or four-wheel drive (RWD or 4WD). The powertrain delivers 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The truck can tow up to 7,500 pounds in certain configurations and offers seating for up to five people. The SuperCrew cab is far more spacious and comfortable than the SuperCab and should be the choice for families.
The Ranger comes standard with cloth upholstery, but Ford also offers vinyl and premium cloth upgrades for the base XL trim. The top Lariat trim adds leather with two available colors. The front buckets are deep, spacious, and nicely supportive, while the back seats offer usable space for car seats and adults. The Tremor package brings synthetic suede seat inserts and unique stitching and accents throughout.
Every Ranger comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen. It runs Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment software, which brings Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM radio, HD radio, USB inputs, and more. Ford offers an options group that includes an additional 4.2-inch color driver information display and additional tech features. The Sync 3 system is one of the most intuitive and easy-to-use infotainment interfaces on the market today, and it makes interacting with the truck less distracting while driving.
The Ranger missed out on a Top Safety Pick in testing with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but it performed well in most crash test categories. It missed the mark on seatbelt reminders, where it earned a “Poor” score, and on LATCH system ease of use, where it earned a “Marginal” rating. The base XL trim gets forward collision warnings, emergency braking, and a rearview camera. The XLT trim adds Ford Co-Pilot360, which brings automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-keep assist, and lane-departure warnings.
The 2022 Ford Ranger is on sale now with a starting price of $27,425 after destination. The XLT starts at $31,475, the Lariat at $35,015, and the top trim crests $40,000. Ford offers several upgrades and accessories for the truck, including step rails, upgraded tires, auxiliary switches, and more.
