I believe your Explorer is FWD normally with the computer allowing power to the rear wheels when they start slipping.

I am told by ford that you need not worry as you do not have 4wd. You have power to the left front wheel only while normal driving. Nothing happens in other modes unless the left front loses traction in which case the right wheel will engage. Under no circumstances will power ever engage in the right front or left rear wheel. I am speaking of my 2016 XLT that is stamped, by Ford "Flex Fuel 4WD". I purchased this vehicle in Oct. 2018 & have been trying to get my dealer to explain why it would not pull out of a shallow dish on gravel on a slight upgrade. The dealership has been dancing around this answer until I was finally able to pin them down today.
