all wheel drive

Asked by Apr 16, 2019 at 12:29 PM about the 1999 Ford Explorer

Question type: General

My 1999 Ford explorer has a select switch that says  Auto  High Low. What
does the Auto mean? Is the car in 4x4 all the time?

Instead of you selecting when to run in 4WD in high or low, Auto tells the car to make the decision for you.

So, it's in 2 wheel drive until a computer thinks it needs to be in 4? How can I disarm this so it will be MY decision when to engage?

You can set it to 4WD low or 4WD High when needed. But auto is like 4WD on-demand; your Explorer is in 2WD and the vehicle constantly senses whether or not wheels are slipping and engages 4WD as necessary.
