Why would my engine begin to sputter and sometimes quit when applying the brakes heavily?

Sometimes have to hit the brakes hard suddenly, and the engine begins to sputter and
sometimes quit. Why?

check the power brake diaphram. when applying the brakes the engine vaccum pulls on air from one side of the pwr brake canister to assist your pedal. if the diaphram is leaking, too much air is allowed into the intake side of the manifold and causes the engine to quit, sputter.
