Manual Transmission problem

Asked by Jacob Nov 10, 2015 at 02:18 PM about the 1988 Ford Ranger XLT Standard Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I have an 88 ranger. It's a five
speed and the shifter went into fifth
gear and got stuck. It acts like it's in
neutral but I can make the shifter
move at all.
It has plenty of clutch fluid.
I'm assuming I'm going to need to
pull the transmission to see what's
wrong.
How hard will this be?
And good recommendations on a
manual to walk me through the
transmission and if need be the
replacement and rebuild of it?

U won't need to pull the trans, just pull the shifter which u can do from in side the cab, it sounds like u have a busted fork on the shifter so my recommendation for this issue is to pull the shifter get everything lined back up and replace the shifter it self

Ok I went to check the shifter itself. Now it's no longer stuck in any gear but will shift through gears without even pressing the clutch.

If the engine is off u should not need the clutch to run through the gears with the engine running that's a different story
