What's wrong with my 1988 GMC 1500 pick up with 350 motor?

The check gages light comes on and the temp gage climbs to max for a minute or so. It then will immediately go back to normal. This doesn't seem to effect the performance.

either the ensor is going bad or the thermostat is starting to lock closed
