idle rpms at start up

when you crank up it want to shutoff and when u start to drive away it has
very
little oil pressure but once you give it some gas the oil pressure comes up
like it
should be it is only idling at around 900 rpms I think it should be 1200 is this
the
correct rpms or does it need to be higher? thank you Myles ps.what is the
idle speed for a 1990 Dodge Dakota 3.9v6 standard cab, auto trans., with
power steering

Your idle speed is controlled by the computer. It should be around 600 RPMs with the engine fully warmed up and the automatic transmission in drive. When cold and with the transmission in Park or neutral it should be around 1200 RPMs. As the engine warms up the RPMs should gradually drop down. Hope that helps! Jim

It has an Idle Air Control (IAC) valve that the computer uses to control the idle speed. Hope that helps! Jim
