Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2006 Dodge Dakota that idles rough at start up and when I stop and when I first
give it a little gas to go forward. The rough idle happens in Park and Drive. Is the idle too
low or is there another problem?

"Clean Throttle Body and Idle Air Control valve" did not answer my question. Thank you for your reply.

If you have the owner's manual and either a Chilton's or Haynes repair manual for your Dakota it will give you the idle speed. When I had my '93 V6, it idled at about 750 - 800 rpm, my '02 with a V8 idles at about 900. Also, if you set the idle at, say 800, and you still have problems, you may need to look at the Idle Air Control Valve as the problem. But before you do that, run some carb cleaner through the throttle body to clean it out. Hope this give you a place to start. /r Martin

I would have to agree with the rest of the crew on this one...I had the same issue with my 2001 Dodge Dakota and what I ended up doing, in addition to cleaning the throttle body plate and inside with carb cleaner, I changed the MAP sensor, Throttle Position Sensor, and the Idle Air Control Valve. In doing all this it cleared the rough idle AND the engine's got more power than it ever had for the time I've had the truck. I hope this helps...good luck.

...also I've seen normal idle between 600 to 700 rpm at a parked or standing idle. Good luck.
