transmission shifting problem

Asked by Jul 16, 2013 at 09:55 AM about the 1994 Dodge Dakota 2 Dr WS Standard Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I first start out its normal. After driving about 3-5 miles 1st gear winds up to about
30-35 then shifts abruptly in to 2nd unless I shift manually. Then I had to shift up to neutral
and back to drive to get 3rd and it also seem to drag down if i don't keep it under
acceleration. I am going to change fluid and filter but I think it might be other things as
well. Any ideas?

You might be low on fluid, but try the fluid and filter first if you want. I'd have it diagnosed, could be a torque convertor problem, requiring you rebuild the transmission. Take the simple cheaper steps first.
