My 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan V-6 3.3 starts, idles up and down, then dies???

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

About a month ago my van kept tossing up the battery warning light--went to autozone, they said battery was fine--turned out to be the alternator, which I replaced, van worked fine after that, though the check oil light was on ever after for no apparent reason. Last night, when to run to the store, put the key in, it started fine, idled normally for a minute or two then the idle dipped, reved back up, dipped again...did this four or five times, and then died. Every time I start the van, it starts just fine--but repeats the rev, dip, rev, dip thing a few times and dies. I am a single mum of four--I'd take it in but am not exactly cash flush...any ideas what this could be and/or should I be buying city bus passes?

*not check oil light, the check ENGINE LIGHT was on ever after----but in regards to the check oil light--i have had it serviced recently--but the check oil light comes on usually when out and about and I stop--like at a stop/intersection/light etc.... but does not stay on otherwise..... also, the gas gauge seems to have stopped working
