Most will have a rattle on the inside. If you have it off, you see light through the other end and looks like honeycomb and not melted.
Don't bother buying a used converter. If funds are limited go for a "universal" converter. Be sure you get the correct one for your emissions system. Either California Emissions or Federal Emissions. Check the emissions decal under the hood. If it mentions that the vehicle "conforms to California Emissions Standards" or is "C.A.R.B. compliant" you have California Emissions and will need that converter. Don't assume, if you live outside of California that you don't have California Emissions. My '00 Grand Prix, originally delivered to NJ, has California Emissions as well as my '03 S-10 Pick Up, originally delivered to Delaware. HTH. - Jim
