Anytime there is less than 1/4 tank of fuel the fuel pump is running hotter than normal, when you run it out of fuel chances are very high that you are damaging the impellers inside the fuel pump so you loose fuel pressure, do it enough times and the pump will not make enough pressure for the engine to run properly or not at all. The flashing check engine light means that there is something wrong with the engine management control system, a check of the engine trouble codes is required to diagnosis the problem, most parts stores can do this for free, write them down and then repost them back here and we can proceed. Gas sludge is in the bottom sump of an near empty tank. Now that gunk is in your fuel system. Change your inline fuel filter & put in fresh gas, & try some fuel injection cleaner liquid too in the tank, (Gum-out) I'll start right up!
