2004 Mustang hit speed bump. Now right front wheel well scrapes tire. What happened?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Please don't slam me for this question. I'm a novice when it comes to car
repairs. I hit a speed bump and suddenly there's an awful grinding noise. I
pull over and the right front wheel well is sitting on the tire. I was told it was
the shock/strut or a ball joint. I had a new strut put on but when the car was
lowered it was exactly the same. I checked under the wheel and found the
ball joint had popped out. After doing research I am wondering if it's the
spring.  The car (which I adore) has 161,000 miles. I just purchased it and was
told it had been sitting for 1 year. Only prior suspension issue was a pull to
the left when braking. I had it towed home and plan on doing the repairs
myself. Any diagnostic insight would be wonderful. I will be doing the ball
joint tomorrow. Or should I do springs first? Thank you.

You must have hit the speed bump at Mustang speed. Many problems can arise when something like this happens. Years ago my brother had this happen to him with his 1967 Mustang, just by looking at the car it seemed a minor damage, but when the mechanic put the car up there was a lot of damage, bent rim, ball joint, shock assembly, radiator support, etc. To be sure that there is no other damage, put the car on a lift if you can and conduct a detailed inspection.

I was going less than 5 mph when I hit that wretched speed bump. I was in a busy shopping center parking lot. No Mustang speed on this one. You're right about the lift though. I wish I had one. I do have a floor jack and jack stands though. I'll be hefting it up tomorrow for exploration. Thanks for the response.
