Can placing too much coolant i the resevoir cause damage to vehicle

My husband placed too much coolant into the reservoir, after driving for 20 minutes we received a message to shut engine off. Was the excess coolant to blame

Was he the adding extra coolant due to the level bring low due to a leak and possible overheating? The extra coolant in the reservoir probably wasn't the issue, but the overheating issue probably is the reason for the message.

No, once the engine gets warm, if it is too full it will just spit out, engine coolant system can only hold so much, can't over fill it.
