oil light going on and off.

Asked by GuruD6RDM Jul 06, 2022 at 06:32 PM about the 2010 Chevrolet Impala LT FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2010 Impala with a 3.5 motor. About a week ago I was driving
around 70 miles an hour when the oil light started going on and off when I
got around 60 miles away from home and then every so often it would go on
and off as I drove back home. oil was ok as I drove it because I checked it
periodically on the way home. I Just checked the oil recently and still ok and
the oil light hasn't come back on, and Oil life is around 58 percent.  I haven't
driven it too far sense. curious if the oil sensor might be going out gradually
even if the light hasn't come back on. Ran a test with a FIXD tester but not
getting a reading!  Any thoughts?

That’s really scary especially on an Impala, install an analog gauge for the oil pressure and drive it so you can see what the actual oil pressure is. If the gauge shows oil pressure drop then you either have an oil pump going out or engine bearings are worn. If the oil pressure stays up then the oil pressure sender is most likely the problem.

.I suspected it being the oil sending unit but needed to make sure of the possibilities of it being anything other then the oil sending unit because of the light going off and on and not staying on permanently so I can pick up the code with my tester to make sure. Thank You GA and beatupchevy for your answers.

Had this problem, the oil filter housing gasket had a leak and would cause oil pressure Senor to go bad everytime I solely fix that. I would advise to make sure that the filter isn’t leaking, if not just change the oil pressure sensor
