Trac Off/ service traction system light on

Asked by Jordan Feb 14, 2018 at 12:02 PM about the 2004 Chevrolet Impala FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My trac off button isn't working and the trac off
light is also on, and the message center reads
service traction soon. I'm trying to get an idea of
what is going on and if it is something I can
replace myself? Also my ABS light is on and check
engine light but the car is running like a top. I just
replaced the plugs and wires and this car has been
taken very well care of. Unfortunately my fuel
gauge my speedometer and my thermostat gauge
are all not working but my gear indicator light with
the trip and odometer lights up and works. Can I
install new gauges without having to worry about
issues with the odometer since it's all one unit?

For your ABS issue, you will have to get an OBD2 scantool that can read ABS codes, and while you're there, you can see what the Check Engine Light code is. More than likely, your ABS code will be something along the lines of a wheel speed sensor, or something close to that. It is common on these vehicles, and to fix that, you have to replace the entire wheel bearing hub assembly. But I'd really get it checked out first by heading to your local AutoZone and they will read the code(s) free of charge. As for your gauges, I would strongly advise against putting an entire gauge cluster in, because then your mileage would be incorrect. For instance, say your odometer reads 150,000 miles on it, and you get a new (used) gauge cluster that came off of a car with 180,000 miles on the odometer. The odometer reading would be very incorrect, and as far as I know, its actually illegal according to the BMV. Instead, I'd personally try to track down the issue of why the gauges aren't functioning, it could be something as simple as a fuse or a couple of new sensors, or possibly a broken wire or loose connection. You won't know unless you try, and it is a bad habit to get into just to shotgun parts and hope it fixes the problem.

I have the same issue traction control needs service, abs light is on, the car shakes when on park or at a stop, very slow and shaky on 1st and 2nd gear but runs fine once i hit 35 mph and over, could it be a sensor causing these issues...would really appreciate some opinions or ideas Thanx

I have a 2001 Chevy impala that makes loud thumping sounds when I'm accelerating. The sound is at its loudest on the the left from front tire.
