Smoke and smell when entering interstate?

Asked by May 02, 2017 at 02:06 AM about the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox LS AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A friend followed me on to the interstate the other day, and he said my car
had a weird smell and black smoke when I accelerated. Is this something I
should be concerned about, or could it be from something simple like
accelerating too hard?

Bad fuel could cause the black smoke and odd smell. I suggest that you put a fuel additive in the tank. It is worth the $25 cost to help keep from the bad fuel damaging your system and the additive usually helps clean the injectors. I use the Wynn's product for this. See the attached photo.

Here is the oil treatment for both gasoline and diesel engines.

It is likely NOT bad fuel. Is your check engine light lit? If so get the codes read at a local autoparts store and post them here. Bad O2 sensor, defective catalyst or other issues could cause this.
