2010 Camry Oil Consumption issues AGAIN!

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

All maintenance only on my 2010 Camry LE since day one of purchase in
Sept 2019 has been at the same Toyota dealership.  I first had an issue at
46,000 miles after purchasing my car brand new. (Car wouldn’t start, had it
towed to dealer, they said they couldn’t find a problem, I refused to come get
it until they did!) Replacing the 'short block' in the engine was covered under
warranty so I was thrilled.  At the time I had no idea that the problem was
related to the infamous oil consumption issue.
At approx 100,000 to 115,000 miles I began having issues again and was
told it was due to low oil, older cars burn more oil, need to have oil checked
more often at 3,000 vs 5,000 miles, etc.  I asked why the Oil light never goes
on and the reply was "yeah, that's weird." I'm sure this is a familiar story to
you all.
The latest incident was in Oct 2018 when I had engine problems again; just
2 months after having an oil in change in August 2018 I was down 2 quarts!
This was at approx 125,000 miles. This time I was told about the oil
consumption problem, had 2 quarts put in free of charge, was asked to
return at 1300 miles for consumption test.  I was told replacing the short
block probably needed to be done, but it was no longer under warranty.  I
reminded the Tech that the short block had been replaced before at 46,000.
He was surprised and checked my electronic record to confirm.  He told me
in the past only certain Toyotas with certain VIN #s were covered.  Also told
me that since I had driven over 50,000 on the NEW short block, that one was
no longer under warranty!  OK, so what they are saying is if anyone buys a
Toyota they should expect to have at least 3 different short blocks during the
life of car?!!!!  I’m currently waiting for a call back on the consumption test
today.  Wish me luck!

Wow.....much impressed with your detailed history on this vehicle. Assuming we are discussing a 4 cylinder 2AZ-FE engine.....the fix for excessive oil consumption is replacing Pistons And Piston Rings. Repairs including a Short Block seem to indicate the engine at some point ran out of oil.......and required to much ...lower end....engine repair. Thus the ..short block...or...lower end of the engine was replaced. That should have solved the oil consumption problem....if....that short block had the updated pistons and rings installed. If the oil consumption problem returned......that is a faulty short block and the responsibility is on the repair facility. So......what was the warranty on the short block....and.....was it a TOYOTA short block...or....an other than Toyota manufactured SB?? Look at the engine repair order for that short block replacement. get back to us with result.

New Short block assembly #11400-0v010 installed 3/8/13 at 46,670 miles though looking back at toyota repair invoices problem started about 20k. (I wasnt educated about the known problem yet) Repair also included a engine gasket kit number 04111-0v011; Fipg oil Pan 00295 - 00103; Bushing take V 11123 - 31050; Bushing exhaust 11126 - 31030, along with other miscellaneous like replaceable element 04152 - YZZA1, Single quart of oil, super long life coolant, power steering f, For new spark plugs. All this was covered under warranty at the time in 2013. I also see a note I wrote myself referring to "scratches in cylinder walls " As explained to me by Toyota tech at the time . Most recently was told that since I drove 70,000 miles AFTER new short block, then not covered under warranty. Suggested consumption test was done last week showing 2 qts down since October. Now was told the reason was due to leaky oil pan plug which already had a larger plug in place so Toyota says smaller plug must have been replaced at some point. Now $600 to replace whole pan! Is this really the problem? If not will Toyota refund my $600? I need to get back in touch with Toyota this week to follow up and am not sure what direction to go in at this point. I actually rented a car over it the past few days as I didn't want to get stuck during the holidays.

Sounds like a Toyota Dealership problem. A Toyota Short Block should last more than 70000 miles. More like 270000 miles. The fact that the oil consumption problem might be caused by a leaking oil pan plug is the fault of the repair shop who changes the oil on this vehicle. If you have had ...other than Toyota.....changing the oil....well...that issue is on you and the facility who has been doing your oil changes. If you are inclined to keep this vehicle you might go for the 600....and continue to monitor ...Oil Consumption....or...tell toyota to put the engine back together and go fight with the folks who changed the oil last time said vehicle was serviced. Keep in mind Toyota did indeed stepped up to the plate ...first go around....would sweet talking them ....work again? Keep us up to date on this very interesting issue.

Same dealership has done every oil change! It's super convenient for me since I have only 1 car, I drop it in AM before work, they shuttle me into city, pick me up after work, bring me back to dealer. I have receipts since day one. I'm a firm believer in getting 'more bees with honey'.

Ok....understood. Oil pans do not go bad. The drain plug does not go bad. The oil change guy must have damaged same. It appears the Dealership should be responsible for this entire repair. Perhaps you czn strike a deal? They pay for the part...you pay for the labor? I wonder what the cost of an oil pan is from another T dealer? Phone call away.
