2010 Corolla CD player having problems reading CD's

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi, We recently bought a used 2010 Corolla which has a factory installed radio (is part of the dashboard and cannot be taken out). For some reason it isn't able to read many CD's, including originals. When it does read and play them, if I shift to the radio and then shift back, most times it can't read the same disc again. Taking out the CD and reinserting, along with shutting off the radio and turning it on again doesn't help. What is weird is that it isn't the same discs every time (one day it can read a certain one but can't the next). I am afraid that if I go to the dealer they will tell me I need to replace the whole cd player, which I prefer not to do as the radio works fine and when it is able to actually play them, the discs sound great. Any suggestions? Perhaps it needs to be cleaned? If so, how? Thanks for your help!

Does sound like it needs to be cleaned or the laser is weak, and who knows about the mechanism. Not worth repairing it. You can remove it easily with a few tools, and find a used one off ebay or a local salvage yard. Probably cost you $50 -$75, or spring for a cool aftermarket one from www.crutchfield.com. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/326-10th-gen-corolla-2nd-gen-matrix-interior-audio-forum/251982-2009-corolla-radio-removal.html
