Mini Cooper engine shuts down

Asked by Elli Jun 14, 2018 at 04:15 AM about the 2008 MINI Cooper Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So bought my used mini a few weeks ago.
Yesterday and again today this happened: slowed
down to park and the engine shutted down
randomly. Once restarted, continued as nothing
happened. Before buying it was checked by a
mechanic- perfect condition. No engine indication
lights came up. It’s a 2008 Mini Cooper with
automatic gear box.

Hi, did you ever find the cause of the problem? I'm having the exact same problem with my 2007 mini I just purchased. Had a mini dealership check it out before purchasing and they reported no issues. Twice now, it's died while stopping for a stop light. It starts back up and runs fine. Both times it's happened I had just gotten off the interstate... not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I had the same issue. Car randomly stopped approx. every 4 weeks. Most of the time after I did serveral short range trips in a row. After it died it started after a short while fine. A view weeks ago the car did not start back up any more which gave the chance to investigate. The fuel pump in the trunk did not work any more. The rootcause was determined by the fuse box at the passenger footroom (right side). In this fusebox there is the relais for the fuel pump. After I replaced this box the car ran fine again. Hope now that the issue is solved for good. Hope this can help to trace the issue.

my 2010 did that today. it didn't sound right when left home to work out; & started up when I left my trainer; I needed gas, so went to my full service station, i needed maybe 12 gallons and oil, which made no sense(they ck. it every two weeks); i left service station & the car seemed to lose speed. I arrived at first stop and was pulling into parking space and it shut off. I was blocking a car,so, checked gas cap just because & started back up, but decided to head back to service station, it shut off for the owner & a mechanic. No dashboard warning lights, which I found strange. Ok, so called my bmw dealer who works on minis; he said may be coils...& DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE IT!!someone else(service station guy thought spark plugs); do they still use those? ANYWAY CAR WAS TOWED, they were so busy, but will exam in morning. I later txted service manager to say I had just filled the tank and needed oil. The fuel hose answer seems to make sense; i heard a new tiny sound coming from back there on monday. Did not drive it yesterday. It was bizarre, but uncomfortable, having to start it all over again. I will do update tomorrow if i can fund you again. The only ray of hope was the lack of warning lights. My car did have to go in for replacement of RFM? i can't remember; inside drivers footwell. It wasn't a campaign, but if all your lights started going nuts, your battery kept dying, etc. THEY REPLACE IT FREE; it was a FAULT in system. So who knows what electrical connection or fuse is related?? !! oh and my boot wouldn't close correctly, but figured it out with help from maybe you guys. WORDY BUT TRUE. i dud a screen shot of the fuel pump answer. I not only meet with service manager, but my technician, comes out to discuss & say helli. THEY R FAMILY.

When the actuator malfunctions, the engine gets no signal for idling speed and stops working. Clogged or restricted EGR Valve: If your EGR valve is clogged, dirty, or defective it can cause your car to stall, idle erratically, or sputter, depending on whether it is stuck open or closed.
