Sell Jeep needs new transmission

Asked by GuruM6MNJ May 28, 2020 at 05:19 PM about the 2008 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4WD

Question type: Car Selling & Trading In

I have a Jeep 2008 with 160,000 miles in it.
Yesterday the transmission died on me and
I’m looking at a $3500 repair. I’m not sure it’s
worth the cost of repair at this point. Should I
try to sell it as is? If I do try to sell it, what is it
worth?

$3,500 !?!? That's either a rebuild or a new trans. The option I always use is to order the transmission "master rebuild kit" and THEN go see what a small shop will charge to do the labor only. An actual transmission shop will usually try to gouge you for the kit price by 3x the original and always adds 5-6 hundred dollars as an insurance that if you return with an issue it doesn't cost them anything but labor. [ I have been a mechanic for 20 years and I have seen the price for a rebuild cost more than a new transmission would more than once because of price gouging]

The simple answer is the price of the Jeep minus the $3500 repair. Private party is around $8K, so figure if you find someone to buy it around $4K. Your better off fixing it and driving it a year or so, then sell it in working condition.
