Repair or Buy New

Asked by Mike Jul 16, 2019 at 03:01 PM about the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 LTZ 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2008 Suburban with 212k miles.  I am in need of replacing the rear
suspension air compressor, both rear air shocks, both front struts and the
front ball joint has "minor play".  The quote given to me (along with the
alignment check) was right at $3,000.  I am not a car person by any means
but I am interested to know if this is a worthwhile investment in hopes that
the car will get me to 300k miles or should I move on from the vehicle?  Any
help is appreciated!

Look into a standard suspension replacement instead of the air suspension. You should save a lot of money. Try StrutMasters.

Won't be worth it. The only time it's worth pouring money into an older high mileage vehicle is when you are the one doing the work. If you have to pay a shop or mechanic to do it you'll always be throwing money down a hole. Chances are this might not even be worth the cost of the parts to fix it, a DIYer with the tools might keep it going using salvaged parts. If you're not a DIYer and paying full retail for a mechanic's services then consider selling this for what you can get out of it or trading it in for a newer vehicle. At 212K miles, anything can go next.
