check engine light is on getting a po 171 code. car is running fine

This is a lean condition. In other words, either not enough fuel is reaching the cylinders or too much air is getting in the cylinders. Most common causes are a vacuum leak or faulty upstream oxygen (O2) sensor. HTH. - Jim
