Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2008 Subaru Outback base model.  Yesterday I had the catalytic
converter replaced, and after, the Check Engine light is on as well as a
blinking Cruise light.  My husband read the code and re-set, then I drove the
car for ~20 miles on the highway.  At  no time did the lights return.  This
morning, both lights came back on.  Will they eventually go out, or should I
return my car to the shop after a few days?  The tech told us it could take
some time for the light to go out.  He seemed straight forward.  Not sure how
to proceed. Thanks for any help.

Reset the computer one more time, if the lights come back I would recommend that you take the car back to the technician, let him read the codes and he should tell you what to do.

Tom is right, you don't always need to replace the catalytic when a CAT code is present. Now, lets hope that the technician lives up to your expectations.

Thanks, Tom and Jorge. To clarify, I did have the catalytic converter replaced. It was needed as the inside honey comb structure was breaking up, and rattling. We tried tightening the heat shield first, but that didn't work. After the installation is when the lights appeared. My husband just told me the codes were PO420 and PO130. He cleared them last night, but they reappeared this morning.

Code P0130 indicates O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 1. This code is mostly generic, there are a number of causes associated with it according to the Subaru Shop Maintenance Manual: Faulty Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1-Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1, harness is open or shorted-Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 circuit, poor electrical connection-Inappropriate fuel pressure-Faulty fuel injectors-Intake air leaks-Exhaust gas leaks. Again, I would just take the car back to the mechanic and let him deal with it.
