CarGurus Analysis: 2024 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 6,487 currently listed for sale and an average price of $29,008, 34.5% of 2024 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2024 Subaru Outback 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
91.3% of 2024 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2024 Subaru Outback stands out by sticking with the raised station wagon formula that helped define the midsize crossover segment. It is now in its sixth generation and was refreshed last year, yet it has kept the wagon-like shape while many rivals have grown into mini-SUVs. That gives it a distinctive blend of SUV-like ride height and visibility with a more practical footprint, which should appeal to buyers who want a smaller vehicle without giving up the sense of confidence many look for in an SUV.
For 2024, the Outback is offered in Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring trims, with further differentiation by powertrain. The updates this year include feature-enriched trim levels and trim-specific aesthetic tweaks, and the broad trim spread means shoppers can choose either a more upscale experience or a simpler, lower-cost version. It also brings a spacious interior, strong safety ratings, and a good ride quality. The main drawbacks are an underwhelming base engine and a dated infotainment system, so the Outback’s appeal is strongest for buyers who value comfort, practicality, and a familiar driving experience over the latest tech or outright performance.

I was taken by surprise by the auto-stop feature when idling in Drive. Since Ive been driving older cars on a day-to-day basis some of the features on the display as well as the steering wheel controls are taking a while to get used to. The backup camera is far superior to my wifes 2019 car, and the stay-in-your-lane feature is helpful but not obnoxious. So far Im pleased.

Is the 2024 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — you’re looking at a 4.5/5 user-rated model with an expert score of 7.83/10. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
The Outback’s appeal is strongest if you want a smaller vehicle with SUV-like ride height and visibility, plus a practical footprint. It also brings a spacious interior, strong safety ratings, and a good ride quality.
The main trade-offs are an underwhelming base engine and a dated infotainment system.
Good and great deals account for 34.4% of listings, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2024 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Outback’s standard all-wheel drive, strong safety ratings, and comfortable ride all support the case for dependable everyday use. Its raised wagon layout also gives you the kind of practical packaging many buyers want from a family vehicle without moving up to a larger SUV.
The expert evaluation also points to a comfortable ride and a well-sorted suspension, which are good signs for day-to-day durability and livability. The least-expensive turbocharged option is the Onyx Edition XT, and Subaru’s standard AWD helps reduce the need to pay extra for traction-focused capability.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the base engine may feel strained if you regularly carry passengers, cargo, or drive in demanding conditions.
What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Subaru Outback?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.1% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a trim with more equipment. Focus on overall condition, service records, and whether the features you want are actually present on the specific trim you’re viewing.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base and Premium trims come with cloth seats, while Onyx Edition and Wilderness use StarTex synthetic leather and Limited adds standard leather seating surfaces. Touring stands out with the most chrome, a larger infotainment screen, and the most upscale cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: The default engine is a 2.5-liter flat-four with 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. XT models and the Wilderness use a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer four-cylinder with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, plus higher towing capacity.
- Safety package: The EyeSight suite is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering, automatic pre-collision braking, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency steering. Blind-spot monitoring with lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert becomes standard on the Onyx Edition, while Touring adds a wide-angle camera, a digital rearview mirror, and a driver-attention monitor.
- Infotainment: The base trim keeps the dual-7-inch-screen setup, while higher trims get the larger 11.6-inch portrait-oriented screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto start with Premium, and Wi-Fi capability comes on all but the base trim.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is EPA-rated at 26 mpg city, 32 highway, and 28 combined. The turbo engine is rated at 22 mpg city, 29 highway, and 25 combined, while the Wilderness returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, and 23 combined.
Which 2024 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2024 Subaru Outback is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the least expensive way into the Outback, but it keeps the simpler screen setup, cloth seats, and the four-speaker audio system. It makes sense if you want the Outback’s core practicality at the lowest price.
- Premium: This is the better everyday pick if you want a more complete feature set, including wireless smartphone integration and more connectivity than the base trim. It’s the trim that most clearly improves livability without pushing you into luxury pricing.
- Onyx Edition: This is the best-value trim if you want the turbocharged engine, since it’s the least expensive turbo option. It also adds standard blind-spot monitoring with lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Wilderness: Choose this if you want the most rugged version, with the turbo engine, all-terrain tires, 9.2 inches of ground clearance, and dual-function X-Mode. It’s the trim for buyers who expect to leave pavement more often.
- Limited: This is the step-up choice if you want a more upscale cabin, including standard leather seating surfaces and more polished exterior details. It’s a good fit if comfort matters more than off-road hardware.
- Touring: This is the top luxury-leaning trim, with the most chrome, the larger screen, a CD player, and added driver-monitoring and visibility tech. It suits you best if you want the most premium Outback experience.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, with additional driver-assistance features added as you move up the trims.

- Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,576 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.27% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 91.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,476, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2024 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $28,971 sits slightly below last year's $30,907.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled enough to give you better buying leverage today, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to move a used Outback. If you buy well now, you’re starting from a more favorable entry point than shoppers had a year ago.
The Outback’s broad appeal should help support demand over time, especially because it combines practicality, standard AWD, and strong safety credentials. Higher-trim versions with desirable equipment may hold attention better than a bare-bones example.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Touring adds a wide-angle camera, a digital rearview mirror, and a driver-attention monitor. A backup camera and high-beam assist are standard as well.
Should I buy a 2024 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2024 if:
- 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.1% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.27% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the wagon-like shape, broad trim spread, and strong safety focus while adding feature-enriched trims.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $26,341, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $28,971 average.
- It offers standard all-wheel drive and strong utility at a lower entry price.
Consider the 2025 if:
- At $32,314, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $28,971 average.
- It keeps the Outback’s distinctive wagon identity while emphasizing comfort and safety.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and trim variety, the 2024 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2023 gives you a lower-cost path into the same basic formula.
