Used 2024 Subaru Outback for Sale nearChicago, IL

How much does the 2024 Subaru Outback cost?

Prices have softened 6.13% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 6,399 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2024 Subaru Outback a good car?

Yes — it earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.

The 2024 Outback fits you well if you want SUV-like confidence in a smaller, more practical package. Its higher ride height and excellent visibility are aimed at buyers who value everyday ease and a reassuring driving position, while the spacious interior and good ride quality support long-distance comfort.

The trade-offs are clear: the base engine is underwhelming, and the infotainment system is dated. If you care more about utility, comfort, and safety than quick acceleration or a modern-feeling interface, the Outback’s strengths line up well with your priorities.

The market looks reasonably favorable, with 37.4% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2024 Subaru Outback reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Outback’s appeal for reliability-minded buyers comes from its practical design, standard all-wheel drive, and strong safety reputation. Its refreshed sixth-generation setup also suggests a mature, well-developed platform rather than a brand-new design still working through early issues.

The base engine is described as underwhelming, but the turbo powertrain is presented as a better fit for the vehicle’s weight and overall mission. The Outback also benefits from standard all-wheel drive and a comfortable ride, which can make it feel like a dependable daily companion over time.

If you buy used, the main long-term ownership risk is ending up with a trim or powertrain that doesn’t match your needs, especially if you want stronger performance.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Subaru Outback?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a trim with more equipment. Focus on overall condition, tire wear, interior wear, and whether the features you want are actually present on the specific trim you’re looking at.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base and Premium trims come with cloth seats, while Onyx Edition and Wilderness get StarTex synthetic leather and Limited adds standard leather seating surfaces. The Touring trim stands out with the most chrome, a larger infotainment screen, and extra convenience and driver-monitoring features.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.5-liter flat-four with 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, while XT versions use a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer four-cylinder with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. The turbo setup also raises towing capacity from 2,700 to 3,500 lbs.
• Safety package: The EyeSight suite is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering, automatic pre-collision braking, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency steering. Blind-spot monitoring with lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert becomes standard on the Onyx Edition, and reverse automatic braking starts with the Onyx trim level.
• Infotainment: The base trim keeps the dual-7-inch-screen setup, while higher trims get the 11.6-inch portrait-oriented screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, wireless connectivity starts with Premium, and Wi-Fi capability comes on all but the base trim.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine is EPA-rated at 26 mpg city, 32 highway, and 28 combined. The turbo engine is estimated at 22 mpg city, 29 highway, and 25 combined, while the Wilderness is rated at 21 city, 26 highway, and 23 combined.

Which 2024 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2024 Subaru Outback is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the least expensive way into the Outback, but it keeps the dual-7-inch-screen setup, cloth seats, and the simpler four-speaker audio system. It makes sense if you want the Outback’s core space, ride height, and standard all-wheel drive without paying for extras.
• Premium: This is the first trim that adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Wi-Fi capability and a better six-speaker audio setup. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more modern daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Onyx Edition: This trim adds StarTex synthetic leather and brings blind-spot monitoring with lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert into the standard safety mix. It’s a smart pick if you want more equipment and a tougher-looking interior without going all the way to the luxury-oriented trims.
• Wilderness: This is the most adventure-focused version, with 9.2 inches of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and a dual-function X-Mode system with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes. Choose it if you want the most off-pavement capability in the lineup.
• Limited: This trim adds standard leather seating surfaces and a more upscale feel without going to the top of the range. It suits you if comfort and cabin finish matter more than rugged styling or maximum tech.
• Touring: This is the most upscale trim, with the largest screen, a CD player, a wide-angle camera, a digital rearview mirror, and a driver-attention monitor. Buy it if you want the most features and the most premium experience.

The Touring trim also gets the added safety and visibility tech, while reverse automatic braking starts with the Onyx trim level.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Subaru Outback?

The market looks moderate and selective, which means you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 6,399 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.13% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 89.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $28,117, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $28,117 sits slightly below last year's $29,955.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also suggests sellers may need to be realistic when they list a used Outback. If you plan to resell later, the current market shows that values have eased rather than climbed, so timing and condition will matter.

Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should hold up better than rougher ones, especially because the Outback still has broad appeal among shoppers who want practicality and standard all-wheel drive.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 Subaru Outback safe?

The 2024 Subaru Outback earned a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) did give it five stars overall.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The EyeSight suite is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering, automatic pre-collision braking, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency steering. Reverse automatic braking becomes standard starting with the Onyx trim level, and blind-spot monitoring with lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert also becomes standard on the Onyx Edition.

Touring adds a wide-angle camera, a digital rearview mirror, and a driver-attention monitor. A backup camera and high-beam assist are standard as well.

Should I buy a 2024 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the raised wagon shape, strong safety ratings, and a broad trim range.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $25,191, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $28,117 average.
• It adds fresh styling, new infotainment and safety tech, and a more accessible Onyx Edition.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $31,110, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $28,117 average.
• It remains a rugged wagon with standard all-wheel drive and strong safety ratings.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and updated equipment, the 2024 is the strongest all-around choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2023 is the better value play, while the 2025 makes sense only if you want to spend more for the newer model year.
