Reviewed a 2015 Subaru 3.6R Limited on Jul 4, 2025
My mother recently purchased a brand new Outback in 2023 and from the drives I’ve taken in it, all of the safety features and the body style, center of gravity and comfort led me to look for used Outbacks for my next purchase. I was not disappointed in the 2015 and I will have a hard time wanting to sit in any other car without a 6-cylinder engine. The Limited trim is perfectly comfortable: the same EyeSight features and safety focuses accomplish the same as a brand new year model but with a touch of “retro” flair in the (arguably dated but, I don’t mind) screen, the accent lighting in the cab and less is more approach of the interiors.

The Subaru Outback 3.6R is the absolute best iteration of the Outback. Test driven model years 2013, 2015 & 2019 and the Outback just gets better and better. If you can find a 3.6R Limited trim level, be quick to snatch it up before I do -- LOL! I truly believe this wagon is worth every penny.

CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2015 Subaru Outback prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2015 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,184 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,621.22 |
| Year-Round High | $12,003.96 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,951 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.42% |
Prices have softened 6.42% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,368 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
If you find a listing below $10,621.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 4.86/5 user rating and 8.17/10 expert rating both point to a strong overall package. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the solid ride, luxurious feel, ample cargo space, and fuel efficiency. The Outback’s standard all-wheel drive also fits the model’s practical, all-weather use case, whether you’re commuting, hauling family gear, or heading out on rougher roads.
With 28.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively while still finding a competitive example.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Review feedback also points to a reliable, practical, and trouble-free ownership experience, with buyers especially valuing the Outback’s dependable all-wheel-drive capability and everyday usefulness.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the Outback as a vehicle that can handle slippery surfaces, rough roads, and daily driving with confidence. It also notes that Subaru’s safety engineering and sturdy structure add to the sense that this is a car you can count on.
Subaru’s EyeSight system adds another layer of reassurance, and the available safety tech helps reduce stress in routine driving. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear from hard use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
At 62.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been used in harsh weather or on rough roads. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and evidence of prior bodywork or suspension wear. Because this model is often chosen for versatility, you’ll want to make sure the example you buy still feels tight, clean, and well cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i includes a rear-view camera, Bluetooth, a touchscreen interface for climate and audio, and a roof rack with crossbars, but it rides on steel wheels and skips the richer comfort and convenience upgrades found higher up.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder delivers 175 hp through a CVT and is described as adequate rather than quick, while the available 3.6-liter six-cylinder brings more power at the cost of efficiency.
- Safety package: EyeSight is available on Premium and Limited trims and adds forward-collision warning and automatic braking, while the Rear Vehicle Detection System on Limited models adds blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist.
- Infotainment: Starlink includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, app access, and a touchscreen interface; the available navigation system uses a 7-inch screen.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 28 mpg in combined driving, though real-world testing returned 23.7 mpg.
Which 2015 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The 2.5i gives you the essentials, but it sticks with steel wheels and leaves out the comfort and driver-assistance upgrades that make the higher trims easier to live with.
- Sweet-spot trim: The 2.5i Premium is the best value if you want heated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, fog lamps, and dual-zone climate control without jumping all the way to the top.
- Premium/top trim: The 2.5i Limited is the most complete everyday choice, adding 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, heated rear seats, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, lane-change assist, and available EyeSight.
- Off-road trim: The 3.6R Limited is the choice if you want stronger acceleration, but the larger engine makes it less appealing if you care most about efficiency.
EyeSight is optional on Premium and Limited trims, and the Rear Vehicle Detection System is standard on Limited models.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,368 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.42% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,621.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $11,184 sits slightly below last year's $11,951.
That softer pricing can help you buy more affordably today, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from prior levels. If you plan to sell later, the current trend means your upside may be more limited unless you buy well and keep the vehicle in excellent condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and versions equipped with EyeSight technology receive a Top Safety Pick+ rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s EyeSight suite uses two windshield-mounted cameras to monitor the road ahead, warn you about danger, and apply the brakes if needed. The available Rear Vehicle Detection System adds blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist, and those features are standard on Limited models.
The Outback also benefits from Subaru’s ring-shaped reinforcement frame, which is designed to help absorb and deflect crash energy away from the cabin. For used shoppers, the main safety takeaway is that EyeSight-equipped examples are the ones to prioritize.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.42% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Redesigned for 2015, it brings a bigger cabin and stronger safety tech.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,730, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $11,184 average.
- It adds a more spacious cabin and a larger cargo area.
The bottom line: if you want the better value, the 2015 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and standout safety. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer-feeling package and extra space, the 2016 is the better secondary path.
