My Change Oil Soon light came on recently. I'm about to make about a 2 hour drive home for Thanksgiving. Am I ok to go?

Asked by Nov 25, 2015 at 12:00 PM about the 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've seen the question threads about how to reset the light, but my question is
a little different. I'm still under the 3000 mile mark by about 800 miles, and I've
checked that the oil isn't low. In fact, there's a different alert for low oil. I know
this because my car tends to need a quart in between changes. I live close to
work, so I don't drive my car much. I'm over the 3 month mark.

Check your oil, and see if it's low.

Awesome. Thanks for the help. It might be a little bit before I make the change as the trip home has strained the budget a little, but this definitely sets my mind at ease a bit. Thanks again.

I have a 2006 grand prix and I always reset it and go when I have the time...

I understand. It just kinda makes me nervous to have an alert come up every time I start or turn off my car.

They probably forgot to reset it last time you got your oil changed. 2200 mi and 3 months sounds kind of early for the light to come on. I used to change mine every 6 months or 6000 miles with synthetic and the light didn't come on. It depends on your driving though. You can go longer between oil changes if you do a lot of long distance highway driving, but shorter if you do a lot of short city driving.
