when driving a noise comes from the wheel but it is not the brakes what else causes a grinding sound

Wheel bearing, CV joint (the axle), you would hear it when moving, not just braking. If you hear it only when braking it's either the brakes or possibly the ABS, if it sounds more like a scraping there is a backing plate that can get bent into the rotor and scrapes.
