Won't crank nor start then it will.

Asked by Travis Dec 27, 2022 at 07:56 PM about the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE1 Ext. Cab LB 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Yes I have a 2007 GMC Sierra
5.3L SLE1 4 DOOR EXT. Cab that
will not crank nor start then you
can wait a day or 2 and it will start
and run perfectly. This has been
going on for over a year. Also
when you turn the key over the
dash lights come on the radio
plays the headlights burn the horn
works practically everything
works except for it cranking and
turning over to start. The only
light that will not illuminate is
what gear you have the shifter in
it's the little green line that the
position that tells you whether it's
in park, neutral, drive, 1, 2, 3. All of
the grounds on the truck are good
and clean. Also all of the
electrical checks out to be good
as well. The battery is good the
fuel pump is turning on and the
starter is working as it should
when crossing over the relay for
the starter it will turn over but the
truck will not crank. You can go
out and try to start it and it might
start up and then you go back
later and it won't. Then like back
in the summer it ran all summer
no problems and now it's winter
time and it's acting up again. I
was told it was the fuel pump
modular they said it controls
signals to the starter but I've
never heard that just like a
second opinion before I go spend
a 285 on a fuel pump modulator
and then pay GM to program it? I
would really like to get this fixed
this has really caused a lot of
issues. Also my OBD2 isn't
showing any codes. The only
code that it shows is an airbag
sensor is bad and check engine
light is on only for that reason.
Any Help would be greatly
appreciated.

Same with any no start problem , check for proper spark , fuel pressure and injector pulse , look for good motor to chassis ground , look for any obvious wiring problems / corrosion at disconnects . Are you using the same key and not a dummy that doesn't have the chip in it ?

Everything you mentioned has been checked and it's all good. And I'm using the factory key also I've checked every ground wire and made sure there getting a good connection and they are good. Like I said prior the truck not turning over at all just everything else is working even check the starter at the relay and it turns over but no start. But I might try it today and it'll prob run like there was never nothing wrong then it'll do it again. It's got GM pusszeld I've took it everywhere no one can find the issue. Everything works as it should. Except for the green light that illuminates on the dash under what gear the truck is in also doesn't work when the truck won't turn over but Everything else works fine. It's a green line under the Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, 1, 2, and 3 that only appears on when the truck is running. When it doesn't turn over it only shows the gears but not the green line on what position the lever is in.

Bang on the dash , something has to be missing , Fuel + spark + compression = vroom

Possibly a bad neutral safety switch. Try starting it in neutral. Also, run the shifter through all the gears a few times and see if it will start. If it will, the neutral safety switch is bad or out of adjustment. BTW the airbag light has nothing to do with the check engine light being on. You've got two separate problems going on. Visit your local auto parts store and have them scan the computers, both the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and the airbag computer, if they can. They'll be able to scan the PCM but they might not have a scan tool that can communicate with the airbag computer. The airbag computer also does not store trouble codes. The engine must be running and the airbag light on for them to get the code out of it. Hope that helps! Jim
