Any body know what the deal is with the rack and pinions going out?

Parts wear out, especially when they are 30 years old. Be thankful you got that many years out of it.

I am doing one on my 05 jetta right now, parts go bad. We fix it and move on.

Things wear out, that is life. With R&P's it is usually seals that go.
