On my dash in my car it dies say something to the effect gear box malfunction, what could that be?

This could be a bad sensor or something wrong with the tranny,the bad is,it will have to be diagnosed by a dealer,and car is in limp mode,and sometimes will run a little but not for long,Saab done this where it would not hurt the engine or tranny.
