my 2002 seems to need a new transmission. what is a reasonable price?

Asked by Sep 21, 2014 at 07:33 PM about the 2002 Jaguar X-TYPE 3.0

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

One day my car simply would not reverse...forward is fine.  mechanic told me that I
needed a new transmission.  56,800 miles, no symptoms until that day.  quoted me a
price of $3700  $2200 for parts and $1500 for labor...seems criminal to spend this much
on a 13 yr old car (bought in November, 2001)...but such low mileage and the car is
otherwise running great.

Sounds like an avg. price to R&R a rebuilt transmission. Why it failed so soon? Ford and Jags are not known for their robust transmissions.
