No start and sizzling on sterling column

Had a new key cut for 2001 GMC Sierra. Truck will
not turn over with new key and making sizzling
noises on sterling column.  Took key out and this
frying sound still being made. Tried old key that
worked fine and it will now not start truck. Help
please
