1997 Chevy Silverado k1500 push button 4x4 issue

Asked by Jan 13, 2017 at 10:51 PM about the 1997 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Had issues past 2-3 years with 4hi light
on after cranking truck and take it a
minute or two to go in 2hi. Then have
trouble going from 2hi to 4hi. 4hi
flashes before tccm clicking back to 2hi
and press 4hi and it finally lights up.
Well now for past 2weeks when
cranking up I notice 2hi not lit up press
it and hear tccm click and light comes
on on 2hi. 4x4 working great, just had
12" of snow over the weekend. I just
have problem with switch light on 2hi
stay on. I have even drove around with
it off before noticing it off, however it
will not light up when I press the 2hi
unless I shift the transmission into
neutral. I also just had a stage 2 4l60e
installed December 20th and the
transfer case completely gone through
inspected, (mic'd for tolerance and all
to specs) and tested. I would assume
that if the encoder was going bad that
the mechanic would have said
something. All he said was it looks
brand new and working great. So is the
issue caused by the actuator or the
selector switch. Tccm in dash seems to
be working as it should. Any advice
would be greatly appreciated, I am
disabled and have limited income and
can't afford to buy all new parts to try
eliminating an electrical gremlin,
especially after the new transmission I
just got.

The transfer case shift motor gets weak after a few years and won't run with any loads on the transfer case or just won't work at all, your rebuilder would not have had the equipment to check the power of the motor so he would not have known if it was weak. These do fail quite often so most parts stores keep these in stock. Doorman seem to make a really good replacement, see if your parts store carries that brand.
