i just bought a 1997 chevy z71 4x4, and 3 out of the 4 times i hammered on the brakes they locked up, but on the fourth time they didnt. as long as u lightly aply the brakes they are fine but soft.

Hammer brakes? Time for a complete brake job, inspect the hoses while your at it and replace the fluid, you probably don't know when it was done last.
