Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I rebuilt the motor and now when trying to start it there is a banging when
turning it over and it won't start. It sounds like it coming from the driver's side.
What could be the problem?

Is the oil pump on the front of the engine or on the crankshaft? There is a reason I ask this.

The oil pump is on the rear of the engine. It is a manual pump attached to the distributor.

The rod bearings were just fine when I had the motor apart. This was the first time trying to start in since re-installing the motor.

There is another ? Did the engine turn 360⁰ while attaching the torque converter bolts with no issues?

It turned just fine with a breaker bar. It was stiff but moved just fine.

I would pull the engine and remove the heads and pan to see what you did wrong.

U might want to check the timing and see if the gears r lined up correctly. To #1

It sounds like the timing is off and sometimes not noticeable when turning by hand. But the starter turn the engine much faster and starts to pump oil to the lifters and the opening of the valve becomes longer thus hitting the top of the piston. And not all lifter fill with oil @ the same time.
