Question type: Maintenance & Repair

so, i just bought 1990 vanagon, ugly as sin right now, but the thing moves! it has approx. 120,000 miles on it. of course, the day after i bought it, it left me sit...twice. but, i'm not mad at it. after i figure out if the battery is junk, what should i look at next? altenator, starter, fuel pump? bah! i want to start replacing all the wear and tear stuff. any suggestions or ideas? what starts fallin apart at 150k? i already know i want to replace the headers and stuff. and how hard is it to hook up a speedo cable?
