99 Chevy Tahoe #2 Cylinder 20 PSI - Does the Engine need to be replaced?

Asked by Nylanom Nov 13, 2018 at 08:04 AM about the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe LS 2-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My mechanic removed the cover, inspected the rocker arm, valve spring, push rod & movement and all looked normal so he says the problem with my Tahoe is internal (cylinder 32 has 20 psi compression).  He says the best solution is to replace the engine (vs. rebuilt).   It has 157481 miles on it.  Does replacing the engine sound right?  Is it worth it for a vehicle of this year/mileage?  It passed inspection a couple years ago and the exterior is in pristeen condition (garage kept for most of it's almost 20 years.  Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

I would run a bore scope down the cylinder to check it's not a bad/burned piston. If it looks okay then it likely just needs a new head gasket. Given the mileage, you would want to replace head gaskets and timing chain which can be done without removing the engine. But you're starting to get into some money at this point. Some people prefer to rebuild and some prefer to replace the engine with a remanufactured one for about the same cost. That's your or your mechanic's judgement call.
