96 cabrio transmission

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've got a 96 VW Cabrio
The trans started slipping out of the blue, no warning. (It hadn't been slowly becoming problematic). As I attempted the troubleshooting it got worse to where it wouldn't move in forward at all. I started it to move it last week and now reverse is gone. (Originally was acting totally normal in reverse while the forward was acting up.)
So, no movement from drive, 1,2 or 3 and reverse.
How can I determine if it's the torque converter or the actual trans? It's got around 200K on the car and have no idea what so ever the history of maintenance, rebuilds or replacement.

Probably the transmission. If you rebuild the transmission, install a new converter.
