Why is my car making a loud knocking sound and will crank but not move?

Asked by Jerry Dec 25, 2020 at 10:37 PM about the 2003 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2003 Toyota Camry with an
automatic transmission that suddenly
started making a loud knocking sound
after cranking up.  About half a mile into
drive vehicle slowly started decreasing
speed momentum and wouldn't gear up
when excellerater was pressed and acting
like it was going to die but it never shut
off. It continued to run and within another
half a mile it picked up speed momentum,
but always continued with a loud knocking
sound until ignition was shut off
voluntarily. Now the car won't start up it
will crank but will not run now I have a
code that's says torque converter would it
be the torque converter or torque
converter solenoid it's leaking around the
torque converter but the car I can put it in
neutral and roll it and I don't hear no
sounds with just the ignition turned on

The knock may be a loose rod bearing which means an engine rebuild.

Ya Know I'm a 68 year old woman who doesn't know about car engines really. I was driving my kids (three boys) up to Vermont camping when my car did the loud knock or two, decreased speed until it wouldn't run. The car would turn over "crank", I guess but in my case, my car, it was diagnosed as dead because I ran it out of oil or something. Looks like if your car is somehow leaking somewhere, and making the knocking pinging noise, it's not good. It's probably dead, like mine was. My husband had to come up and get me and the kids without the car. Sorry.

Lack of oil will do that. Vermont this time of year must be pretty chilly.
