Over drive transmission

Asked by Jun 09, 2016 at 04:50 PM about the 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 2 Dr ST 4WD Extended Cab LB

My truck is disengaging while I am driving down
the road. I put it in neutral and back in drive and it
engages and drives awhile then RPMS jumps and
it comes out of gear or drops into 1st. It works fine
if the overdrive light is on and it won't turn off
when I press it on and off.

Sounds like the processor is messed up, I would take it to a tranny shop, they should be able to plug in and check the solenoid functions of the tranny and the reading from the processor, who knows could just be a bad ground pathway.
