Car has a lot of miles and I am very short of $ so I cant afford to replace the ball joint/s
I normally don't drive a lot of miles so I am wondering if I just grease the joint with no boot how regular should I do this.

what is the possible down side and possible cost?

You can't fabricate a rubber seal. Your best bet is to replace them for your safely. Is it the uppers or lowers? Doing a set on each side will run you around $300-$400 at a garage. Call around a couple places for a price.
