You mean o2 sensor? No. a faulty o2 sensor may cause you car to run with an improper fuel/air trim but not what you describe. Suggest an OBD scan to help find out what's going on

http://www.obd-codes.com/p0420, I can't copy and paste the causes and solutions, it's copyrighted. But I can say there are LOTS of possible causes, your cat is not working properly (catalytic convertor) and one of the possibilities is indeed a faulty o2 sensor

i have a 2000 cavalier and we just replaced the 02 sensor as the check engine light on. everything he adjusts it, if is ok for a few hours and later that day it comes back on.. it runs a little rough, he said he found a lot of water in the tank a few weeks ago. put dry gas in it and i put premium gas in it, hoping it will work its way out?? i know i am probably dreaming. any suggestions
